New Jersey regulators have signed off on a second agreement that would allow Ocean Wind LLC to bring power from a planned 1,100-MW offshore wind farm to shore. Ocean Wind, an Ørsted A/S subsidiary, won the state's first offshore wind solicitation in June 2019, getting approval from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to build the Ocean Offshore Wind Farm 15 miles off the coast of Atlantic City (BPU Docket No. QO18121289). The board on March 27 authorized the company to procure capacity interconnection rights, or CIRs, for the project from RC Cape May Holdings at the retired B.L. England power plant in Cape May County. Regulators in September 2019 approved a similar agreement between Ocean Wind and Exelon Generation Co. LLC for the purchase of CIRs at the shuttered Oyster Creek nuclear plant in Ocean County. As with that decision, the board in its March 27 said allowing Ocean Wind to procure interconnection rights at the B.L. England plant would reduce the risk and uncertainty associated with transmission upgrades, ultimately to the benefit of ratepayers.
