Sole contention in Oyster Creek renewal hearing ruled moot by ASLB

The only contention admitted in Oyster Creek's license renewal hearing was declared moot last week by an Atomic Safety and Licensing Board, but the board gave six public interest groups 20 days to file a new contention. In the proceeding, the Nuclear Information and Resource Service and five other interest groups challenged the adequacy of AmerGen's program to prevent further corrosion of Oyster Creek's Mark I steel containment dry-well (INRC, 6 March, 3). AmerGen is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Exelon, which operates Oyster Creek. In its June 6 order, the ASLB said those challenges are rendered "moot and subject to dismissal" by an additional commitment made in April by AmerGen to measure the drywell's thickness every 10 years during the period of extended operation (INRC, 1 May, 4).
