Shaw Areva Cited For Qa Problems In Mox Plant Construction Work

NRC last month issued a Notice of Violation to Shaw Areva MOX Services for quality assurance issues at the mixed-oxide fuel fabrication plant the company is building for DOE at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina. In the July 29 NOV, NRC cited Shaw Areva for a single violation covering four separate issues. Mark Lesser, a branch chief in NRC's division of construction inspection, said all four issues represented examples of violations of a QA program, or failures to implement one. Lesser was among several NRC officials interviewed August 7. One example dealt with storage of QA records, including receipt inspection records and design drawings. Such records are supposed to be stored in a cabinet that is designed to withstand a fire for at least an hour, and Shaw Areva's were not, NRC said.
