AECL projects at Chalk River approved by Canadian regulators

Canada's nuclear regulator has waived detailed environmental assessment reviews of two projects planned by Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. at its Chalk River property. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission announced June 25 that it approved the staff recommendations to accept the environmental screenings of AECL's plans to construct a fuel packaging and storage facility and to decommission its 41-year-old heavy water upgrading plant. Without acceptance of the screening reports, the proposals would have been subjected to an environmental review panel or mediator.
