NRC looking into allegations of falsified paperwork at San Onofre

NRC is looking into allegations that paperwork on a project to paint some non-safety-related equipment and buildings at San Onofre had been falsified. The allegations were raised by a contract painter at the 2,254-MW nuclear power plant. Southern California Edison Co. spokesman Gil Alexander said last week that safety was never compromised. Concerns raised by a Bechtel employee were related to administrative paperwork, he said, adding that the painters used the right equipment and painted the right buildings and components. In an e-mail response to questions, Alexander said that "errors were identified involving the transfer of data from a working copy of the paperwork to the copy of the record." He added that, in one instance, "a supervisor accepted environmental readings for one area that had been taken for an adjacent area."
