Nuclear renaissance may revive some manufacturing, Klein says

Japan Steel Works, the only company in the world producing heavy steel forgings for reactor vessels, now has a three-year waiting list, NRC Chairman Dale Klein noted in two speeches this month. While the line for the forgings keeps growing, other manufacturers might be inspired to "revive the capabilities they once had to produce those components," Klein said in a May 1 speech to the North American Energy Summit at the University of Texas, San Antonio. He repeated to Wall Street analysts four days later that he expected other manufacturers to be lured back into business. But it would take time, he said.
