IG audit says improvements needed in NRC power uprate program

NRC staff's understanding of power uprate inspection procedures is "inconsistent," and "the written quality of power uprate safety evaluations needs improvement," the agency's Office of the Inspector General said last month in an audit report. Executive Director for Operations Luis Reye accepted most of the OIG's recommendations for improvement but said the power uprate program is "strong, safe anc very successful." In its March 28 report, OIG said that NRC staff has "an inconsistent understanding of the power uprate inspection procedure's use, implementation, and documentation" because the procedure, IP 71004, lacks guidance on those issues. This "results in stakeholders being unable to adequately monitor power uprate inspections," it said.
