AECL's ACR-1000 project in UK hit by concerns at home

A 15-month hiatus in Canadian regulatory and provincial government commitment to new nuclear reactor licensing and construction helped hinder Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's attempts to take its ACR-1000 design to the UK, Canadian crown corporation officials said last week. Hugh MacDiarmid, AECL's president and CEO, told the media when AECL announced April 4 that it was pulling out of the UK competition that AECL "didn't have the demonstration project under way here in our home country." Keith Bradley, AECL's regional vice president for business development in the UK, said: "The UK nuclear regulators had made it clear to participating vendors all along that they did not want to end up the lead regulators for any designs undergoing their assessment."
