Potential for power reactor operation beyond 60 years to be assessed

The possibility of extending the operational life of power reactors beyond 60 years would be assessed in long-term research now being considered by the NRC, the Department of Energy and the industry. The efforts are in early stages of consideration, but have already sparked great interest. Last month NRC and DOE co-sponsored a three-day public workshop on "life beyond 60" in Bethesda, Maryland, which was attended by over 150 participants (Nucleonics Week, 21 Feb., 2).
