China’s UK HPR1000 design completes first step of design review

The first step of the UK’s generic design assessment process for China’s UK HPR1000, also known as the Hualong One, has been completed, the Office for Nuclear Regulation and the Environment Agency said in a joint statement November 16. The regulators said that they will interact during the assessment with France’s EDF and General Nuclear System Ltd., or GNS, a UK joint venture company owned by China General Nuclear Power Corp., or CGN. CGN and EDF plan to build a two-reactor nuclear plant at Bradwell in Essex using the UK HPR1000 technology. CGN would own 66.5% in the proposed Bradwell plant and EDF will own 33.5%. The start of the actual reactor assessment process in step 2 of the GDA follows the preparatory work by GNS and the regulators that comprises step 1 of the GDA process.
