State officials object to plan to reduce licensee notification requirements

State officials have objected to NRC’s proposal to remove therequirement that licensees report certain non-emergency events tothe agency within hours.The Nuclear Energy Institute petitioned NRC in 2018 to removethe requirement, saying reporting non-emergency events was a pooruse of the time of nuclear plant operators and was not intendedwhen the regulations were originally established. Commissioners inAugust told staff to develop a potential rulemaking to change therequirements.
