NRC issues new review schedule for interim storage projects

Safety, security and environmental reviews for consolidated interimstorage facilities proposed by Waste Control Specialists in AndrewsCounty, Texas, and by Holtec International in southeastern NewMexico could now be completed in 2021, as many as nine monthslater than previously expected, under separate new schedulesreleased by NRC July 1.In a letter dated that day to Jeffrey Isakson, chief executive officerand president of Interim Storage Partners, NRC said that the revisedtimeline gives agency staff until May 2021 to compete both a finalsafety evaluation report and final environmental impact statement onthe license application. An August 2018 NRC schedule set the dates forthe completing the reviews as August 2020.
