Supreme Court upholds Virginia uranium mining ban

The US Supreme Court last week upheld thestate of Virginia’s 1982 moratorium onmining uranium in a case regarding adeposit considered to be one of the largestin the country.In a 6-to-3 judgment issued June 17, thehigh court affirmed a federal circuit courtruling that Virginia had a constitutional rightto regulate uranium mining on private land inthe state. Federal law in this case does notpreempt the state’s regulation of conventionaluranium mining, the majority decided in thecase, Virginia Uranium v. Warren.
