To ensure better compliance with federal minimum ener-ngy-efficiency standards and Energy Star guidelines, an appli-nance industry group launched an independent verification nprogram last week for refrigerator and freezer manufacturers.The Energy Department has been cracking down on nviolations of those standards, and the Association of Home nAppliance Manufacturers said its voluntary program would nhelp boost consumer and regulator confidence in their prod-nucts. nThe testing program, which AHAM said is available to all nmanufacturers, regardless of whether they are AHAM mem-nbers, measures refrigerator and freezer internal volume and nenergy usage, in accordance with DOE-prescribed testing pro-ncedures.
