San Francisco's 'foodshed' Roundtable

Like many cities, San Francisco is taking a closer look at food systems planning. The newly formed San Francisco Urban-Rural Roundtable recently convened 30 urban and rural leaders from in and around San Francisco to examine ways of relinking agriculture to California cities "as a crucial piece in [achieving] sustain-ability in one generation." A new study, "Think Globally, Eat Locally: San Francisco Foodshed Assessment," by the American Farmland Trust, found that some 20 million tons of food are grown within 100 miles of the city. It isn't clear, however, how much of that food stays in the area and whether the region could fulfill all the city's food needs-particularly in light of development pressures on prime agricultural areas. The roundtable will focus on the availability of high-quality food; the business needs of regional producers, manufacturers, distributors, and purveyors; and the fair use of natural resources.
