Less than 20 years ago, the lands ad-jacent to the Scioto and Olentangy rivers in downtown Columbus, Ohio, were a mix of abandoned buildings, auto impound lots, crumbling infrastructure, and acres of untapped opportunity for residential and commercial development. The Columbus Riverfront Vision Plan, which launched in 1998 and was fully implemented by 2015, offers an exemplary lesson in how public-private collaboration, driven by trusted leadership, bold thinking, and a laser focus on implementation, can exceed a community's goals for the physical transformation of a big city downtown.
