Turning a town around: a proactive approach to urban design

Few books draw together design, public policy and the real estate development processes, which are grounded in a specific place and which discuss the detail of both the control processes and the built outcomes. John Punter's The Vancouver Achievement is one;1 this is another. It tells a fascinating story of regime change - how a local planning authority caused, compelled and otherwise enabled developers to 'up-their-game' in terms of design quality of their developments and, in the process, literally turned a town around.
