From new towns to green politics. Campaigning for town and country planning, 1946-1990

This is the paperback edition of a book that was first published in 1991. A companion volume chronicles the period 1899-1946. It is, in my view, an excellent history of British planning that will remain useful for many years to come. The perspective at first seems restrictive, as the focus is on the evolution of one organization, the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA), the organization that originally lobbied for garden cities in Britain. It turns out that the history of the TCPA, as analysed by Hardy, does not only open a window on the history and functioning of British planning, but also on larger questions regarding the role of planning and planning advocates in a democratic society.
