摘要

Losing Site: Architecture, Memory and Place is the fourth book from Shelley Hornstein's fourth book on architecture and memory. The book addresses the connection between memory and place and how buildings are related to memories. As the author states, '... architecture is considered to be the mapping of physical, mental or emotional space' (back cover). The author draws upon a multi-disciplinary literature, including both social sciences and humanities. Hornstein points out that on the one hand, architecture creates material structures that are being remembered and, on the other, architectural space that can exist as a place beyond the end of the physical structure. Focusing on the latter, she divides her book into seven thematic chapters. She pays less attention to the extraordinary, such as the aftermath of war and natural disasters, but rather seeks to make her points from the more prosaic and everyday.
