Bridges of reform: inter-racial civil rights activism in twentieth-century Los Angeles

Shana Bernstein's important new work highlights Los Angeles's often overlooked significance in the history of American civil rights struggles. Having examined an impressive two dozen manuscript collections as well as government reports, oral histories, and newspaper accounts, Bernstein reveals the process by which L.A.'s ethnoracial minorities came to realize socioeco-nomic and political inclusion and established inter-racial coalitions. Her central argument is that these coalitions - emergent in the 1930s - persisted well into the early 1950s and had a lasting impact on local, state, and national politics.
