Canals have generally received less attention from urban historians than railways, despite their greater importance in the critical first stages of British industrialization. Kellett's Railways and the Victorian City remains a landmark for those interested in the impact that later transport innovation had on urban development, but the pre-railway period awaits its definitive history. Maw's work is not intended as a 'Kellett for canals', but it still represents a very important and substantial study of the impact of canal transportation on the 'first industrial city'. It not only answers many questions about the commercial operation of canals and their impact on urban form, but also suggests some new and important avenues for research.
