In the 'Conclusion' to The Sage Handbook of Housing Studies, one of the editors, David F. Clapham, asserts that the 'primary aim' of this collection of essays is to present a 'state of the art review of housing research' (484). Yet as the volume itself amply demonstrates, there is, and can be, no stasis in that field nor in our striving to understand it. Housing Studies has for some time been established as a social sciences field in its own right, and its dynamic and restlessly inquisitive nature is a result not only of the central impact of its object on daily human life, but of the wide-ranging number of disciplines - including political and social sciences, design and technology - which it calls to its research forum. With 24 chapters of around 8000-9000 words each, all written by leading scholars representing that full range of disciplines, this book is admirable in the breadth of its scope.
