At the risk of making an unnecessary and sweeping generalization, work on the English working class tends to suffer from a common range of faults: often they are sentimental accounts of people that never really existed; excessively romanticize a heterogeneous group of people and experiences to the extent that the sometimes harsh realities of life were dramatically underplayed; or, they can be patronizing middle class accounts of individual struggles. Given the potential pitfalls, I approached Jones's book with some intrigue and trepidation but, fortunately, this volume does none of the above.
