Centrgaz, a subsidiary of Russian gas giant Gazprom, has signed a contract to construct the 900-km South Stream gas pipeline through Serbia. Centrgaz will focus on design, procurement, construction and installation activities, personnel training and commissioning of South Stream in Serbia. The contract stipulates involving Serbian subcontractors in carrying out certain operations. The 2,400-km pipeline will carry Russian gas to southern Europe through the Black Sea. Some 63 billion cubic meters per annum (bcma) of gas will be piped via the Black Sea to Bulgaria from where the route will go to Serbia, Hungary and Slovenia, and on to northern Italy. Gazprom and Eni own a 50% and 20% stake in the project, respectively, while Germany's Wintershall and France's EDF each own 15%. The South Stream Pipeline is expected to reach full capacity in 2018.
