Someone once said, "When you dance with your customer, let him (or her) lead." Sage advice for companies competing in the gas marketing business. But advice that's mostly unheeded, according to industry analysts. Recently, for example, an energy executive quoted in a national journal complained that "Gas marketing companies pay too little attention to their customers and too much to seeking merger partners, trying out new risk management tricks or upgrading their trading floors." He went on to say that gas companies, like manufacturers and retailers worldwide, must shift their focus to the new cutting edge of competition: customer service. Without being too simplistic, the fastest way to achieve this is by educating employees to be more helpful, reliable and nicer. And, in so doing, help them find new ways to enjoy their work.
