LETTER FROM A WANDERING PHOTOGRAMMETRIST

Many of our more mature subscribers may remember that The Photogrammetric Record used to publish papers relating not only to novel research in our subject area but also to interesting projects in commercial practice. For example, there have been articles on photogrammetry at a chemical plant (Farrand, 1965), power station cooling towers (Chisholm, 1977), the Renault car factory (Wahl, 1983), electricity generating plant (Clayton, 1989) and shipbuilding (Cochrane, 1989). All these papers describe new methods or interesting applications, frequently in close range photogrammetry; this is what makes them unusual and worthy of record. Although publishing papers on both novel academic research and notable commercial projects is a laudable and long-cherished aim of the Record, this means that run-of-the-mill mapping and measurement projects, even those involving unusual ventures, remain largely unrecorded, at least outside the organisations involved.
