In a significant move to combat the gradual increase in terrorist attacks against the United States, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the November that the Homeland Security Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events at the University of Southern California (USC) was being designated the first homeland security center of excellence. The center will study the effect of terrorist threats and activities on the nation's infrastructure, especially the facets dealing with transportation, telecommunications, and electric power.
