Shedding weight of OS division may keep Palm trim in 2002

U.S.-Based PDA vendor Palm completed the internal separation of its operating systems (OS) business in mid-January, in line with plans announced in mid-2001 to create a subsidiary company. It remains to be seen if the move will help the firm stave off increasing competition from rival OS platforms from Microsoft and Symbian. Under the new corporate structure, Palm will license the Palm OS platform through its Solutions Group for use in its handheld devices—such as the recently launched i705, the company's first product offering wireless e-mail access via Cingular Wireless' packet data network.
