Verizon upgrades VCast, but U.S. mobile TV finds new competitor in Samsung's A-VSB

Additional details on a long-awaited mobile-TV-network launch and the introduction of a potentially competing technology highlighted last week's International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. At a Jan. 7 press conference on the eve of CES, Verizon Wireless announced that its MediaFLO-based VCast Mobile TV service will launch in an unspecified number of major U.S. markets by end-1Q06. Verizon says that, at launch, it will market two compatible phones, the Samsung SCH-u620 and LG Electronics VX 9400, each with dedicated TV keys.
