Indian regulator's proposal fuels debate over IMT extension bands

India's telecoms regulator is considering issuing spectrum at 2.3GHz, 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz for wireless broadband access (WBA) services.rnIn a new consultation paper, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India has overturned its September 2006 proposal that spectrum for WBA services be confined to the 3-3.4GHz and 3.4-3.5GHz bands.rnBut bones of contention have arisen concerning the actual use of the proposed 2.3GHz and 2.5GHz frequencies, in light of the International Telecommunications Union's identification of the 2.5GHz spectrum band and more recently the 2.3GHz band as suitable for extended IMT-2000 services.rnIndia's No. 2 mobile operator, Reliance Communications, maintains that spectrum in the 2.5-2.69GHz frequency band should be reserved for WBA operators.
