3G added to 3GPP UMA standard

The 3GPP has announced that it has incorporated 3G into the UMA standard - known in the 3GPP as GAN -which enables fixed/mobile convergence. The announcement is timely, because vendors are developing UMA-based 3G dual-mode handset and femtocell products in anricipation of operator deployments later this year. Proponents of UMA are saying that the inclusion of the technology in the 3GPP standard is important for FMC, but doubts remain about the long-term viability of UMA as a hand-over mechanism. As SIP-based services become more prevalent, many companies say, voice-call continuity (VCC) will become the preferred means of offering FMC services.
