MENA region sees significant online video growth

Pay TV in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region remains a hard sell for operators and content aggregators: only 8% of TV homes in MENA subscribed to a pay-TV service at the end of 2020. The last decade tells the story of two distinctly different market outcomes: between 2011 and 2016, the market grew with a CAGR of 11%, but in the next five-year period, 2016 to 2021, the CAGR was -1%. Even assuming that by the end of 2021 beIN will be reinstated in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and total pay-TV figures will rise, Omdia anticipates that the total pay TV market in 2021 will be 6% smaller than in 2016, the year before the diplomatic dispute that led to the blockade of beIN.
