The translatological dictionary An international encyclopedia of translation studies is the 'result of complicated negotiations which can in retrospect be seen as essential to its success' (p. iii). It was compiled by an international editorial board, comprising three Gottingen representatives (Harald Kittel, Armin Paul Frank, Fritz Paul) and four internationally-renowned scholars (Norbert Greiner, Theo Hermans, Werner Koller and Jose Lambert), in association with Juliane House and Brigitte Schultze. It consists of three volumes, comprising approximately 350 articles in German, English, and - to a lesser extent - French, and is divided into forty-four chapters. With its 1061 pages, it is larger than its most obvious competitor, the one-volume Rout ledge encyclopedia of translation studies (M. Baker [Ed.], 1998 [654 pages], succeeded in 2009 by M. Baker & G. Saldanha [Eds.], with 674 pages).
