The first issue of volume 21 of Perspectives comprises two distinct sections. The first part is taken up by a special section guest-edited by Pilar Orero and Anna Matamala, both based in Barcelona, whose Universitat Autonoma has been the centre of many regional, national and international projects on audiovisual translation, a sub-area of research that is burgeoning in countries like Britain, Spain and Italy, but which has also seen a steady increase in many others, including South Africa. In this country, with eleven official languages and many unofficial ones, subtitles in English seem to link the speakers of the various languages. The guest-editors of this special section are certainly in a better position to introduce Este Hefer's article on this topic as well as the papers selected for all the special section, so I will leave the task to them.
