It is gratifying to see the number of survey books on Translation Studies (TS) that have been published lately (e.g. Baker, 2010; Malmkjaer, 2007; Munday, 2012; Pym, 2010; Schjoldager, 2008; Snell-Hornby, 2006). This shows that TS has come of age and is studied and taught at many institutions around the world. It also shows that the research area is open to many interpretations, particularly when these interpretations come from established scholars in the field. Susan Bassnett is certainly such a scholar. Her contributions to TS are many and well-known and she has helped direct focus onto particular areas within the field; more specifically, she has been one of the driving forces of the cultural turn in translation studies, with a particular focus on postcolonial TS. It is perhaps no surprise, then, that the sections of her book that deal with these issues are the most substantial ones, and those that are the most well-researched, well-written, and enjoyable. When it comes to other areas, the author takes on a more modest role, and refers mainly to other writers.
