Translation in Modern Japan

摘要

Translation in Modern Japan is a collection of essays, most of which are originally authored in English, though several have been translated from Japanese for the collection. As the title suggests, the articles are thematically linked by their focus on translation in post-1860s Japan, though within the various articles there is a substantial range of interpretations of, and focuses within, these themes. Thus, the subjects examined within the volume range from shifts in Japanese pronoun use in response to translations from European languages to the circumstances that brought about The Tale of Genji's ascension to the rank of world literary classic through translation.
