摘要

In this introduction of the theme issue, we have presented eight special features of everyday automation experience and propose related promising research directions. We highlight that users get into contact with automation experience technology in the form of uninitiated encounters and that they are exposed to implicit ambient interactions. Living with such systems requires people to trust in calm, often unnoticeable, distributed system operation and adaptation, but they also may necessitate abrupt manual interventions and knowledgeable customization activities. We argue that, while important theoretical concepts have been proposed for related aspects, a more comprehensive conceptual framing is needed to grasp the qualities of everyday automation experience in their entirety and their various manifestations.
