Andy Savage, PWI President, gave the opening address and spoke of the history of light rail systems in the UK, with their virtual disappearance for a period after the wars and the limited and difficult renaissance from the 1970s on. Whilst those new systems that have been opened have all been successful there are areas of concern. Delivery issues and a lack of common standards mean that there is the need to learn from Continental experience, where the history has been more consistent.
