Cruise ship operators have invested in hybrid communications that combine satellite connectivity with links to terrestrial mobile networks. This enables passengers to use their own devices on board during voyages and port visits with similar connectivity to what they can expect from onshore resorts. Carnival Corp has extended its use of terrestrial broadband and satellite connectivity of its WiFi@Sea service to more of its ships. It has deployed enhanced WiFi networks on 40 per cent of the fleet, resulting in significantly improved connection rates for its passengers. It uses more than 30 satellites and several terrestrial hubs for this hybrid connectivity. Carnival's brands currently using the network include Aida Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America Line.
