摘要

The objective of this paper is to study the profitability of the development of applications for heterogeneous networked computing environments using simulation tools. Firstly, an overview of the problem is given, discussing the advantages of development on top of a high-performance simulator rather than directly on the real hardware. Then PS, an existing simulator of PVM applications, is described and the advantages of a distributed matrix multiplication application in a workstation cluster is discussed as a case study. In the proposed example, the performance of two well-know algorithms is analyzed and optimized by the simulated execution of prototypes, i.e., of partially-implemented program designs.
