Don't Slow Your Flow

In last month's article, I discussed what flow planning is all about. I started with the preplanning issues before an order is actually entered into a plant's system, and discussed item management and principles and practices a plant should consider. A team of qualified personnel should review all critical aspects of an item to ensure the plant has the correct information needed to quote and process the order and ensure each item is reviewed for process capabilities, costs and profitability. Process management and flow planning is about developing a planning system that provides for process management at every stage, from order quoting to order receipt, customer service estimating and specification reviews, planning the orders through manufacturing and delivery to the customer.
