UPM has a good grip on globalisation in Changshu

UPM's fine paper mill in Changshu, China, is a model example of adaptation to the global market. The Finnish paper mill has an optimal location with excellent road connections in the middle of the world's fastest growing market area. Most of the mill's pulp consumption is transported from the other side of the globe. Scale gets easily blurred in China. The country has already become the world's largest paper producer and the second largest paper consumer. China currently produces over 60 million tonnes of paper per annum, which is more than four times that of Finland. The forecast is that consumption growth will continue to be about 10 percent per year. The living standards of Chinese people are rising swiftly, and their demand for fine paper products and packaging materials is growing the fastest. This is the market that UPM is making wood-free fine paper for. The Changshu mill's smaller paper machine was installed in 1999 and produces 350,000 tonnes of coated and uncoat-ed printing papers per annum. The mill's larger paper machine was started up in 2005 and has an annual capacity of 450,000 tonnes of uncoated office paper and offset printing paper.
