Milo was first introduced by Nestle in Australia in 1934 as a tonic food drink. It derived its name from Milon, who in Greek mythology was a champion athlete. In 1936, Berlin won the bid to host the Olympic Games with Milo as major sponsor. Nazism was running rampant throughout pre-World War II Eastern Europe and Adolf Hitler viewed it as a golden opportunity to showcase his country and prove to the rest of the world that his Aryan race was superior. However, Jesse Owens had other ideas and won no less than four gold medals.rnThe brand was launched in 1939 in SA. Although available in chocolate bar form, Nestle still promotes Milo as a sports-orientated drink with its main ingredients being malt, milk and cocoa. One of SA's favourite icons is now available as a nutritious energy cereal manufactured in the Philippines.
