It can be argued that in a recession - more so than any other time - consumers prefer to buy brands that they know and trust. Therefore, the packaging plays an integral role in ensuring sales by capturing the consumer's attention. In times of economic instability, consumers are cautious about how they spend their hard-earned cash, and so the packaging needs to bernparticularly eye catching and to really stand out on shelf.rnThere has never been a better time to increase marketing spend than in an economic downturn. This is because brand equity needs to be maintained and gaining a competitive advantage over similar products in the marketplace becomes more important than ever. One more thing to consider is the cost of having to reinstate a brand when the financial markets recover. Product upgrades are essential to attract the consumer, and the benefits of the purchase need to be emphasised on pack to highlight the product's value as consumers become more value consciousrnin a recession. No-brand products or those packaged at a lesser cost may be cheaper, but will they capture the consumer's attention in the first place?
