It's a question that probably has been asked in nearly every manufacturing facility at one time or another: whether to use in-house-fabricated equipment or buy custom-built machinery. In the case of Nashville-based Standard Candy, the company regularly used conveyors manufactured by maintenance staff in its operations. For the most part, its conveyors had worked very well. But when the company needed 18 new conveyors in a short amount of time to complete an expansion project, it had to look elsewhere.
