As she tells it, Jan Dabek Steiner came into the folding carton business as volunteer labor, helping her parents get the business off the ground. Starting in Santa Ana, Calif., her dad Macy Dabek produced folding cartons using a one-color press, along with a letterpress converted to work as a die-cutter, while her mother hand-glued the cartons. Three years later, they moved to space in Anaheim and the company continued to grow. As an only child growing up surrounded by an expanding enterprise, Steiner was pulled along, over the years finding herself in a variety of roles including production, reception, HR, QA, and sales, finally succeeding her father, whose failing health led him to step down in 1982. But Macy's legacy and "can do" attitude continue today with his daughter at the helm and grandson, Macy Steiner, as Chief Operating Officer, and heading up sales and marketing. Today, Thoro is a Certified Woman-Owned Business with 145 employees and $30 million in sales, occupying over 112,000 square feet in Corona, Calif. Thoro gained ISO 9002 certification by TUV Management Services, was upgraded to ISO 9001:2000 and further upgraded to the ISO 9001:2008 standard in 2009.
