It is possible to find digital label press owners who claim they print 12 hours a day non-stop and call this 'long run' printing. That may seem like long run from a manufacturing perspective, but it is not long runs of individual jobs. "These companies are really doing batched manufacturing," says Marco Boer, Vice president of IT-Strategies. "They are arranging short run orders into groups with varied content and shape on the same substrate, so the machine does not need to stop until a new group of orders for a different substrate is to be printed." This avoids the non-productive time for changing plates between jobs of varying content and shape on an analog press and saves the cost of plates and makeready. But there is more to it than that.
