Walking the aisles: Transseasonal outerwear was in view, but July is still all about summer clearance sales

At the mid point of July, with temperatures sizzling across much of the nation, excluding the New York area, and drought wiping out crops in many regions, retailers were bent on selling off summer apparel after a less than stellar June, and according to the Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi's national survey of chain stores, they were succeeding. But department stores have not abandoned tradition. Fall and winter fashions were also showing up on the racks and they were selling, too, especially at the high end.
