Preparation and luminescent properties of Eu-substituted barium-yttrium orthosilicate phosphors

Barium-yttrium orthosilicate Ba_9Y_2Si_6O_(24) host and luminescent materials composed of Ba_(9-3m/2)Eu_mY_2Si_6O_(24) (m = 0.01-0.5) and Ba_9Y_(2-n)Eu_nSi_60_(24) (n = 0.01 -0.5) were prepared via a solid-state reaction. The photolumi-nescence excitation and emission properties of Eu~(3+) and Eu~(2+) in the prepared orthosilicate phosphors were elucidated. The dependence of the luminescent intensity of the Eu~(3+)- and Eu~(2+)-doped alkaline-earth orthosilicates on the content of the activators has been investigated. The desired CIE (International Commission on Illumination) values, including emissions throughout the red and green regions of the spectra, were obtained using these phosphors. Based on the integrated emission, the relative quantum efficiency of Ba_gY_(1.6)Eu_(0.4)Si_60_(24) was determined. These Eu-doped red or green phosphors could be used in applications involving white-light near-UV light-emitting-diodes.
