Judd-Ofelt analysis of spectroscopic properties of Tm~(3+), Ho~(3+) doped GdVO_4 crystals

Tm~(3+): GdVO_4 and Ho~(3+): GdVO_4 crystals with, good optical quality were grown by Czochralski technique. Polarized absorption and unpolarized fluorescence spectra of Tm~(3+) and Ho~(3+) in GdVO_4 crystals were measured. The Judd-Ofelt (JO) model was applied to obtain the three phenomenological intensity parameters. For Tm~(3+), Ω_2 = 8.16 x 10~(-20), Ω_4 = 2.45 x 10~(-20), Ω_6 = 0.98 x 10~(-20) (with dimension of cm~2). For Ho~(3+)Ω_2 = 1.51 x 10~(-20), Ω_4 = 1.61 x 10~(-20), Ω_6 = 1.22 x 10~(-20) (with dimension of cm~2). The radiative probabilities, radiative lifetimes, and branch ratios of Tm~(3+) and Ho~(3+) in GdVO_4 crystals were then determined. Using the reciprocity method and Fuch-tbauer-Ladenberg formula, the stimulated emission cross-sections for some interested transitions, such as (~5F_4, ~5S_2) → ~5I_8 of Ho~(3+) and ~1G_4 → ~3H_6, ~3H_4 → ~3F_4 of Tm~(3+) in GdVO_4, were determined and discussed.
